We came to the last report of the special series on EaD in RN. We passed information on distance education courses and the sectors that work in this type of education at UFRN, at the IFRN, at UERN and, finally, we will present the scenario of the EAD at the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid, UFERSA, whose campus is located in Mossoró, the second largest city in Rio Grande do Norte.

At the university, the Distance Education Nucleus (NEaD) works, responsible for the management of the EaD courses available to the external public. According to the general coordinator of NEaD / UFERSA, Maria de Lourdes Fernandes, the main mission of offering distance courses is to contribute in a relevant way to the internalization and the dissemination of quality and free Higher Education in all regions of the state.

Still according to the manager, this means that citizens do not have to go to the big urban centers or leave their families, their jobs and their life, in search of the so dreamed professional qualification. With this action, knowledge is disseminated in a sustainable way and can be applied in each region, developing the potential of that area effectively, completes Lourdes Fernandes.

At present, four higher distance education courses are offered by UFERSA, all in the area of licenciatura. They are: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Computing. The courses are distributed in seven poles that work in counties such as Caraúbas, Guamaré, Angicos, Marcelino Vieira and Pau dos Ferros. In these places, the students have pedagogical support and carry out some face-to-face activities.

In the list of frequently asked questions to the NEaD, the one that heads the questionnaire concerns the form of entrance in the courses. Therefore, it is good to pay attention to the answer: the student can enter the distance courses through the National High School Examination (ENEM) or the Freire Platform. The selection is not made through the SISU, but through a specific selection made available by NEaD when vacancies are available.

In the special series on Distance Education in our state we landed in Mossoró. The second largest city of Potiguar houses the Central Campus of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN). Concerned with the expansion of access to higher education to the populations of several North-Rio Grande municipalities, UERN has a specific sector for the promotion of the EAD modality.

According to a report released by the university’s communication office, the Directorate of Distance Education of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (DEaD / UERN) won the approval of new courses last year, as well as the formation of a new class of Letters- Portuguese Language and the third offer for Specialization in Media in Education.

In this sense, there is a confidence in the possibility of expanding the activities developed, mainly in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. We spoke with the Director of DEaD / UERN, Giann Mendes Ribeiro, to talk about the contribution of distance education in professional qualification in regions far from the state capital and what are the perspectives for 2019.

According to Giann Mendes, EAD’s role in DEaD / UERN is to provide access to public and quality education for social groups that would not be able to attend higher education in person, either because of the impossibility of studying and working , or by its geographical location.

Still according to him, at present, in five poles of face-to-face support, two classes of the Course of Letters-Portuguese Language are in activity. Mendes also highlights the expectation of authorization from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) to start and offer vacancies for 4 new degrees.

The director of DEaD / UERN clarifies that these new courses were approved in Notice 05/2018, published in March of last year. The degrees are in the areas of Letras-Libras, Letras-Inglês, Música e Educação do Campo. In the morning of Thursday (2), the auditorium of the Central Library Zila Mamede (BCZM), Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), received guests to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the library that is a reference in literary collection in the state . The UFRN Central Library was founded on May 2, 1959, and in 1985 it was renamed Zila Mamede, a tribute to the first Potiguar librarian, who for years directed it.

The event was opened with an ecumenical act followed by the launch of a series of literary works. Among the titles released, highlight “Immortal Hour – Contemporary UFRN”. The title of the book is a direct reference to a quotation made by Luís da Câmara Cascudo in his address in March 1959, during the installation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.

The work makes a contemporary analysis of the text titled University and Civilization, read by Câmara Cascudo in this historical event. In the essay, he addressed the concepts of culture and civilization, as well as spoke about the importance of universities in the civilizing process – a debate that, even after six decades, remains quite current.

The Secretariat of Distance Education of UFRN (SEDIS) could not be left out of this important moment. Thus, among the organizers of the texts present in the book “Immortal Hour”, there are two SEDIS collaborators: José Correia and Kaline Sampaio. The photographer of the Communication Department of the university’s Rectory, Cícero Oliveira, completes the team responsible for the organization of the work.

In the book, in addition to the textual historical rescue, there are more than 170 images recorded in the last six years at UFRN. This work should not be kept only as a souvenir but rather used as a theoretical reference for research on the university and the Potiguar society by the new generations of readers.
