Sensory Garden opens inside the Câmara Cascudo Museum in Natal

On World Cities Day, October 31st, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte received a Sensory Garden as a gift. It was installed inside the UFRN Science Park, at the Câmara Cascudo Museum, and the inauguration is part of the programming of the October Urban Circuit of the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) 2019.

According to one of the coordinators of the Science Park, Magnolia Araújo, this initiative is the result of an action of some universities in the Northeast of Brazil (UFC, UFCA, UFRN and UFOB) in line with the Cooperation and Studies Network on Sustainability, Innovation and Public Policies. (RESIPP). Also according to Professor Magnolia Araújo, many blind people fail to visit public spaces for lack of accessibility conditions.

In the new leisure and learning area, visitors with some kind of visual impairment will be encouraged to grope the plants, smell them, taste them and learn about their origin. The garden received Braille signs with information about the species of Brazilian flora and also tactile floor to facilitate the movement during the tour. The Vice-Rector of UFRN, Henio Ferreira de Miranda, congratulated the Directorate of the Museum and Science Park for the work done.

SEDIS supported the Extension Project that resulted in the construction of the Sensory Garden. For UFRN’s Secretary of Distance Education, Carmem Rêgo, who attended the launching ceremony, it is necessary to value any and all social inclusion work developed in favor of those with physical limitations.

The visitation of the Sensory Garden will follow the opening hours of the Câmara Cascudo Museum: Tuesday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm. Already on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 12:30 to 18h. For more information, visit the Museum website.

Nova Cruz to receive 1st Exhibition Science and Mathematics of Educational Products for Classroom

The On-campus Support Center of Nova Cruz, in the Potiguar Wild Region, will receive, on November 8, the 1st Exhibition of Science and Mathematics Educational Products for the Classroom. The event is a promotion of the UFRN Graduate Program in Teaching Natural Sciences and Mathematics (PPGECNM) and will feature a diversified schedule.

According to the coordinator of the Mostra, Professor Ivanise Cortez de Sousa, the objective of this initiative is to stimulate the use of problematization in the teaching of Natural Sciences, as well as to discuss the elaboration of educational products related to Mathematics and other sciences. The expectation, according to Ivanise, is to gather about 80 people, including teachers of the basic education network and undergraduate students of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Natal will win a Sensory Garden during the closing of the October Urban Circuit of the UN-Habitat Program

The capital of Rio Grande do Norte is on the map of the activities of the October Urban Circuit of the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) 2019. On October 31, World Cities Day, will be inaugurated inside the Parque das Sciences, at the Câmara Cascudo Museum in Natal, a Sensory Garden.

The inauguration of this Sensory Garden by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte is part of the event: “Education, Innovation and Inclusion: initiatives to promote sustainability”. This program in the city of Natal is the result of a network initiative of some universities in the Northeast of Brazil (UFC, UFCA, UFRN and UFOB), from the Cooperation and Studies Network on Sustainability, Innovation and Public Policy (RESIPP).

According to one of the coordinators of the Science Park, Magnolia Araújo, this type of garden already exists in some Brazilian capitals and is part of a social inclusion proposal, especially for blind people. Also according to Professor Magnolia Araújo, in the Garden, visitors will be encouraged to touch, smell, taste and interact with the surrounding environment.

People who are not visually impaired, the so-called seers, can also enjoy this space of experimentation and learning, because besides stimulating the senses, the intention is to arouse the feeling of respect and protection for nature and thus multiply the teachings. related to environmental awareness.

In addition to the opening of the Sensory Garden for visitors, scheduled to take place from 8:30 am on the last day of October, the program will consist of a panel for sharing inclusion and innovation initiatives in the educational and museum context and two practical courses.

SEDIS and members of the “Syphilis No” Project carry out special programming to warn about the prevention of this STI

On the morning of Thursday (17), SEDIS collaborators and LAIS researchers participated in a syphilis prevention activity. They attended the lecture of the infectious disease doctor, Monica Bay, professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the UFRN Health Sciences Center and researcher of the “Non Syphilis” Project. The expert talked about the cause, transmission, diagnosis, treatment, cure and preventive measures related to this sexually transmitted infection.

LAIS and Project researcher Juciano Lacerda, who is also a professor at the UFRN Communication Department, took the opportunity to talk about the communication strategies employed to raise awareness about this health problem. Outside the SEDIS auditorium, a team from the university’s Center for Collective Health Studies, coordinated by nurse Celeste Rocha, performed the rapid testing for Syphilis.

The initiative is in line with the provisions of Law 13,430/2017, which requires that the third Saturday of October be reserved for actions related to the National Day to Combat Syphilis and Congenital Syphilis. SEDIS decided to anticipate, for the internal public, the chance to clear all doubts about this IST so that this information can be multiplied.

UFRN’s Secretary of Distance Education and Vice-Project Coordinator Carmem Rêgo also did the quick testing and pointed out that such programs are held to arouse people’s interest in well-being and health care.
