After hosting the XV Brazilian Congress of Distance Higher Education (ESUD) and IV the International Congress of Higher Distance Education (CIESUD) last year, Natal will host, on May 30 and 31, 2019, the Seminar Regional UniRede Northeast. The event will have as its central theme “The DEA on the agenda: scenario, challenges and perspectives in the supply of HEIs associated with the Northeast.”

The seminar is promoted by the University Networking Association (UniRede), in all regions of the country, to discuss topics related to the current context of distance education policies. If you are interested in participating in the seminar of the Northeast region, at the Central Campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Natal, pay attention: the vacancies are limited! Access the event page, sign up and welcome.

In the third report of the special series on EaD in RN, we will know more about the performance of the Campus EaD of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN). The EaD Campus, currently Campus Natal – Zona Leste, was created in January 2011 and offers several courses based on institutional demand, as well as courses at Rede Escola Técnica do Brasil (Rede e-Tec Brasil) and the Open University System of Brazil (UAB).

To better understand the role of this Campus in Rio Grande do Norte, we spoke with the general director of the IFRN Distance Learning Campus, Alexsandro Paulino de Oliveira. For Professor Alexsandro Paulino, the main mission of the EaD Campus is to expand access to quality public education through public poles throughout the state.

Still, according to the director of the IFRN EaD Campus, the great goal of his team is to bring knowledge to every corner of the RN, overcoming the barriers of distance through technology. According to him, there is a concern with the training of professionals who work on campus, whether technical or academic, so that they can act in this type of teaching, taking into account their specific characteristics.

The EaD Campus offers superior courses in the areas of Licenciatura in Spanish, Technology in Environmental Management and Degree in Pedagogical Training for unlicensed graduates. In addition to the higher courses, 7 subsequent technical courses, 9 postgraduate courses and 6 Initial and Continuing Training courses are available.

These courses are offered in 30 in-person support centers, distributed in 21 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte and 1 in Paraíba, 16 of which are located on the IFRN campuses. For those interested in joining distance education courses, the leader clarifies that although the EAD allows flexible space and study time, the student should not confuse this situation with less dedication.

In order to fulfill its tasks, the student must therefore be proactive, managing his commitments on his own, complements the director. Those interested in learning more about the IFRN EaD Campus should visit the <http://ead.ifrn.edu.br> portal or follow profiles on social networks (@IFRNCampusEaD). After presenting a Panorama of the Open University Program in Brazil in the country, we highlight the actions developed at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), a pioneer in the provision of this type of education in the state. UFRN created, in June 2003, the Secretariat for Distance Education (SEDIS). The purpose of this Secretariat is to promote distance education, based on the use of information and communication technologies in the teaching and learning process.

Through the Open University of Brazil (UAB) program, 9 undergraduate courses (Biological Sciences, Physical Education, Physics, Geography, History, Literature, Mathematics, Pedagogy and Chemistry) are offered by UFRN and 1 Bachelor’s degree (Public Administration) in poles of the Metropolitan Region of Natal and in the interior of the state. Currently, UFRN offers distance courses in Polos de Apoio Presencial in the cities of Extremoz, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Parnamirim, New Cross, Guamaré, Macau, Lajes, Grossos, Caraúbas, Martins, Marcelino Vieira, Luís Gomes, Caicó and Currais Novos .

According to UFRN Secretary of Distance Education, Carmem Rêgo, EAD courses play an important role in training for the labor market, as well as contributing effectively to the social insertion and democratization of higher education by providing courses in places distant, distributing the training process with the daily activities of those who seek, through the study, their personal and professional fulfillment. Still according to Professor Carmem Rêgo, there is, for now, no provision for the launch of a new call for vacancies for higher distance courses at UFRN. However, those interested in competing for vacancies in this modality of teaching must take the tests of the National High School Examination (ENEM), whose enrollment period will be held from May 6 to 17, 2019.

To find out more about the distance courses at the university, you must access the SEDIS website and the profiles of the Secretariat on social networks. If you want to search for details about the history of SEDIS, just download the e-book “Distance Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte – Fifteen years of practice“.
